Official Announcement

Launch of the Sickle Cell Organizations Forum (First Phase: Kano and Katsina States)

The Management of SIDES is proud to announce its strategic support for the establishment of the Sickle Cell Organizations Forum, beginning with a First Phase rollout in Kano and Katsina States.

This initiative marks a significant milestone in the collective effort to streamline advocacy, enhance patient care, and influence public health policy regarding Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) in Northern Nigeria.

Why This Forum Matters

Sickle Cell Disease remains a major public health challenge, with thousands of families navigating complex medical, social, and economic hurdles. The establishment of this forum is driven by the urgent need to address:

Fragmented Advocacy: By uniting various SCD support groups, we create a single, powerful voice that can engage more effectively with government bodies and international partners.

Access to Care: The forum will work directly with the Ministry of Health and Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) units to improve the availability of affordable medications, such as Hydroxyurea, and routine screening services.

Policy Dialogue: We aim to move beyond basic awareness and enter the realm of legislative change, advocating for policies that protect the rights of SCD patients in education, employment, and healthcare coverage.

Stigma and Education: Through coordinated grassroots mobilization, the forum will tackle the social myths surrounding the disease, promoting genotype compatibility testing and newborn screening.

A Call to Action

The challenges faced by SCD patients—ranging from frequent vaso-occlusive crises to the high cost of specialized care—require more than just clinical intervention; they require a robust socio-political framework.

SIDES is committed to providing the technical and organizational backbone for this forum in Kano and Katsina. We believe that through structured advocacy and continuous policy dialogue, we can ensure that every individual living with Sickle Cell Disease has the opportunity to lead a full and productive life.
